The East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Scholarship

Scholarship Introduction:
The East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) goals are to introduce U.S. graduate students to East Asia and Pacific science and engineering in the context of a research setting, and to help students initiate scientific relationships that will better enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts. Selected students participate in research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan. All institutes, except Japan, last approximately 8 weeks from June to August. Japan lasts approximately 10 weeks from June to August.

Eligibility for scholarship:

• Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
• Enrolled in a research-oriented master’s or Ph.D. degree program (including joint degree programs);
• Students enrolled in joint Bachelor/Master’s programs must have graduated from the undergraduate degree (if the student’s institution considers them in graduate status, that student is eligible);
• Enrolled at a U.S. institution in the United States; and
• Pursuing studies in fields of science and engineering research and education supported by the National Science Founda

PhD Position in Neuroanatomy/Neuroscience, Belgium

Hasselt University open application for research to get a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. The projects are focused on neuroimmunological repair strategies after brain and spinal cord injury with special emphasis on the use of anti-inflammatory mediators to enhance functional regeneration.

The successful applicant will be working on "the use of stem cells as carriers of pro-regenerative factors after spinal cord injury". The project includes a rich spectrum of techniques such as cell and brain slice cultures, histology, molecular biology and behavior tests.

The candidate will also participate in teaching macroscopic and microscopic neuroanatomy in the department of morphology for bachelor students in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She/He will also supervise master students in the School for Life Sciences. The UHasselt provides a high-performance and dynamic teaching concept based on supervised self studies in which researchers also play an active role.

Candidates must have an officially recognized master degree in biological, (bio)medical or life sciences or equivalent with a molecular/cellular orientation. Last year students can also apply.

The Department of Quantitative Social Science (DoQSS) at the Institute of Education, University of London, houses a major ESRC-funded project on the use of administrative data in policy analysis directed by Professor Lorraine Dearden. The ADMIN project forms part of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods. As part of ADMIN, the Institute is now funding a new PhD studentship to work on methodological and policy issues relating to the use of administrative data, especially administrative data that are linked to survey data.

The studentship is for three years. It covers tuition fees and provides an annual tax-free stipend of approx. £15,500. There may also be the opportunity to undertake limited part-time research assistance and/or teaching.


Essential Criteria

Applicants will have a good first degree in a quantitative social science, e.g. economics, geography or psychology, or in maths or statistics (the degree should be at the 2:1 level or above if obtained in the UK). They will have a strong quantitative background and will usually have completed, or be about to complete, an MSc degree or equivalent in a quantitative social science or in research methods.

The studentship is open to both existing UK residents and to citizens of other EU countries.
